Shotgun Singer

$14.38

If Songs for a Hurricane, Kris Delmhorst’s album from 2003, was deep and thought-provoking, this fifth solo CD (excluding side projects and EPs) released five years later, Shotgun Singer, wraps up that psychological web with sound modifications that go deeper and denser. The artist seems to take liberally from George Martin’s efforts on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and transfer those embellishments to the needs of a songwriter/singer in the same way that Emitt Rhodes emulated the first Paul McCartney solo LP, McCartney. The dangling vocal on “Midnight Ringer” squeezes out all emotion possible while the instrumentation goes about its business filling the available spaces in highly entertaining fashion. Keep in mind, all this praise isn’t saying that this is “the next Sgt. Pepper’s” or anything of the sort, what is obvious is that Delmhorst picks up on great work and uses what came before to interpret her new ideas, forging a sound that is both original and appealing. Picture Joni Mitchell deciding to step into Brian Wilson’s treasure chest of sound effects and very consciously — and cautiously — blending them like some aural chemist to interact with the words and melodies. “Blue Adeline” is simple yet majestic, the cymbals working as if they offer their own notes, the song following the path set by another K.D. — k.d. lang — on her masterpiece, Ingénue, which this artist clearly owes much to. That debt, though, is perhaps on another level, say the dark recesses that the Velvet Underground’s Nico explored, yet fashioned to translate well to the arena where Delmhorst chooses to reside. The singer plays 11 instruments in addition to her lovely and dreamy vocals on this highly ambitious project, the minimal guitar on “1,000 Reasons” teasing the listener as the strings bring up the conclusion, each song setting up the next experience. Going “back down “To the Wire” is smart, clever pop, and also appears to be Delmhorst’s best opportunity for a Top 40 hit; as a central part of this CD it also serves as the counterpoint to the title track, “Shotgun Singer.” “Birds of Belfast” inspires with its church bell atmosphere, a very conscious and finely crafted set of movements that, like so much on this disc, calls the audience back to investigate/excavate these expressive feelings again. Shotgun Singer is a very elaborate presentation that is up there with Jackie DeShannon’s underrated but terrific You Know Me and Tracy Bonham’s exquisite Down Here CDs, two albums that helped bring in the new millennium. Kris Delmhorst presents a logical sequel to the above referenced collections eight years later and anyone dipping into a song like “Freediver” or any other random track on this disc is bound to be quite surprised at the extraordinary depth inside. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi Performers: David “Goody” Goodrich – Guitar Loops;

David Blue/Singer Songwriter Project

$16.79

This is a fascinating CD compilation from WEA’s European operation, and one that ’60s music enthusiasts — and not just folk and folk-rock aficionados — may need to own. The David Blue album (which is also out by itself on CD from Collector’s Choice in the United States) is a lost folk-rock classic, every bit as much fun and as exciting as Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home or Highway 61 Revisited. Eleven of its 12 tracks are filled with crunchy and slashing electric guitars, accompanying a raspy, defiant singer who’s clearly dissatisfied with elements of his world; what’s more, there’s just a hint of garage punk leanness in Blue’s overall sound and an appropriate accompanying snideness to his singing to appeal to the listenership of, say, the Chocolate Watchband or the Standells, which is something that Dylan himself didn’t quite pull off. The only place where the record lets up in the least is on “Grand Hotel,” which is just a little too far over on the folk side of folk-rock. The accompanying Singer Songwriter Project album was one of those records that, in New York City at least, was so ubiquitous and also so relatively unappealing in its purpose and design, that it usually got passed over by collectors going through used bins in the 1970s. It’s pleasant enough, but more of a curio in the output of participants David Blue (or Dave Cohen, as he was known at that point), Richard Farina, Patrick Sky, and Bruce Murdoch, than anything essential to all but completists — but those with fond memories of Greenwich Village in the early/mid-’60s, or curiosity about some of the music generated there, or just wondering whence songs like Dylan’s contemporaneous “Subterranean Homesick Blues” came will love Farina’s “House Un-American Blues Activity Dream,” and may well want this CD for the contents of this LP. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

The Jazz Singer

$7.18

Neil Diamond’s 1980 screen turn as a charismatic singer torn between Jewish tradition and pop music stardom spawned this phenomenally successful soundtrack album — six million copies and counting. Diamond’s 21st century resurgence as a walking item of kitsch has sparked renewed interest in the bombastic melting-pot jam “America,” as well as his signature late-career ballad “Hello Again.” In addition, the lite FM favorite “Love on the Rocks” is classic, raw-throated Neil. But beyond these notables, The Jazz Singer is an album of passable pop songs that stand on the edge of disco and in the grip of melodrama. The hyper “You Baby” is dressed up with an audio clip marking the film’s embarrassing black face sequence, while the album’s midsection sags with songs that shine like Sunset Strip billboards, yet lack any real substance. Swelling strings and lovely lyrics abound, but it all seems directionless, as if Diamond’s just going through the motions. Similarly, Jewish traditionals like “Kol Nidre/My Name is Yussel” are important as thematic elements. But removed from the film and in the context of open-collared, glitzy numbers like “Hey Louise,” their reverence is off-putting. As it’s aged, The Jazz Singer has come to mark the moment when Diamond fully embraced his soft rock audience and completely turned his back on the ambition and spine-tingling vocal presence of his early career. That decision certainly proved to be an economic winner, but it ignored the fact that his most resonant performances really tear into a song with true mirth. The Jazz Singer’s big hits have this quality — a fact not lost on a new generation of listeners who revel in Diamond’s powerful voice and showmanship. But the album’s bulk is as wooden as Neil’s acting. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi Performers: Boyd H. Schlaefer – Choir, Chorus; Dale D. The Wedding Singer [Original Soundtrack]

$6.77

The very fact that the good-natured romantic comedy The Wedding Singer is set in 1985 means that the accompanying soundtrack is a perfect vehicle for a host of early-’80s new wave classics. Although the album, like the movie, gets the time period slightly wrong — new wave was finished by 1985, but the entire project barrels ahead as if it were the glory days of 1983 — the end result is thoroughly enjoyable. There are only two remakes and two Adam Sandler showcases on the 14-track album, leaving ten tracks of great new wave and post-punk from Culture Club (“Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”), the Police (“Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”), the Psychedelic Furs (“Love My Way”), Elvis Costello (“Everyday I Write the Book”), the Thompson Twins (“Hold Me Now”), David Bowie (“China Girl”), New Order (“Blue Monday”), Musical Youth (“Pass the Dutchie”), the Smiths (“How Soon Is Now?”), and Billy Idol (“White Wedding”), who also appears in the film. The Presidents of the United States of America do a surprisingly good job with the Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star” (the track turned out to be the last thing the group recorded), and the Sandler’s tracks are better and funnier than his comedy records, but Ellen Dow’s rappin’ granny on “Rapper’s Delight” is either the funniest thing you’ve ever heard or annoys the hell out of you. Even if the latter case holds true for you, it’s not enough to ruin one of the most entertaining pop soundtracks in a while. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

The Book of David, Vol. 1: The Transition

$7.97

On bended knee, and with a trembling voice, Dave Hollister sounds more fervently full of remorse than ever before. That’s saying a lot, given his past work with Force One Network and Blackstreet, as well as his previous four solo albums. In this case, he’s looking for forgiveness from his Lord, not his woman. His first album for Gospo Centric (the logo is very, very small on its packaging, as if he and his label don’t want to scare off the nonbelieving and gospel-music-phobic members of his fan base), The Book of David, Vol. 1: The Transition really isn’t that much different from the singer’s past releases. Hollister has a newfound focus (which you can see in his eyes, unless you can’t get past the fact that he now might pass as a dead ringer for actor Chi McBride), and the subject matter often takes on a slightly more pronounced turn for the spiritual, but the tracks bump and sway as much as any other set he has released. Besides, the detectable changes shouldn’t shock anyone who has followed him — he came up in the church, and both of his parents were preachers. The album lacks the beneficial brevity of 2003′s Real Talk and meanders during the second half. Beyond that, it is just as appealing as anything else in the man’s catalog and should not be disregarded by virtue of its label of release. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Dave Hollister – Vocals (Background); Onitsha Shaw – Vocals (Background); Agape Jerry – Guitar
