Rock & Roll $4.78 After a three-year (1955 — 1958) meteoric rise to international fame, Frankie Lymon (vocal) was ready to emerge from beneath the shadow of the Teenagers, with whom he’d scored the Top 20 pop entries “Why Do Fools Fall in Love,” “I Want You to Be My Girl,” and “Goody Goody” for Gee Records. It was just one of several labels founded in the mid- to late ’50s in New York City by record producer George Goldner, Joe Kolsky, and nightclub owner Morris Levy. The trio felt Roulette Records, another of their “holdings,” might prove a more suitable venue for Lymon to strike out as a solo artist. With his trademark falsetto still intact, the vocalist was paired up with Roulette’s A&R department heads Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore — one of the most important producing/engineering partnerships of the pre-British Invasion golden age of American pop music. Their contributions to Lymon’s debut long-player Rock & Roll (1958) are particularly noteworthy. Nowhere is that as evident than the remakes of “Wake Up Little Suzie” and “Little Bitty Pretty One” as the singer can be heard double-tracking his own leads. The resulting resonance created a richer texture for the harmonies. Elsewhere, Lymon’s phrasing on the wailing opener “Waiting in School,” the swinging “It Hurts to Be in Love,” as well as an update of the early West Coast R&B rave-up “Buzz, Buzz, Buzz” are among the best of the lesser-known titles. Here he likewise places his stamp on material that had become indelibly linked to other artists — such as Elvis Presley and “Jailhouse Rock” or Paul Anka’s “Diana.” While a slight departure from most of the album, the jazzy and optimistic “Send for Me” and the midtempo ballad “Silhouettes” reveal Lymon’s criminally underutilized potential as a crooner. Clyde McPhatter was one of the greatest R&B and Pop singers during the `50s and `60s, and a huge influence on the evolution of American music. During his heyday, his name and voice loomed so much larger than that of the group The Drifters, which he founded, that it took five years for them to recover from his departure. He is regarded as one of the top lead singers of all time and the second most popular black male vocalist of the `50s, behind Fats Domino. Clyde was a very strong influence on the Soul era that followed his prominence in the music business. His remarkable high tenor influenced everyone from Jackie Wilson and Smokey Robinson to Aaron Neville. Also, Clyde was there during the very early days of Rock `n’ Roll and made significant contributions to building it into the commercial success that it became. Hoo Doo Records. 2010.

Rock & Roll Machine $38.39 Rock & Roll Machine was Triumph’s second official release in their native Canada, but is known to most fans worldwide as the first, since it was repackaged and resequenced with half of their eponymous debut shortly after the band inked a new global contract with MCA Records. All this became the source of much confusion over the ensuing years, but was finally rectified somewhat in 1999, when the definitive CD reissue of the band’s entire catalog restored both albums to their original Canadian track listings. The only downside to this, of course, is that, for a large number of fans, a once formidable album was suddenly transformed into two significantly less spectacular offerings, but such is life. Like many Triumph albums that followed, Rock & Roll Machine opens with a rousing Gil Moore hard rock stomper, “Takes Time,” before giving way to one of Rik Emmett’s more melodically inclined numbers, “Bringing It on Home,” which gave many listeners their first taste of his vocal resemblance to Rush singer Geddy Lee (a similarity that would haunt Triumph throughout their career). Of note, Rock & Roll Machine also boasts some of the band’s most daring forays into progressive rock pomposity, via the two-part “New York City Streets” (the first mixing MOR and jazzy bits; the second returning to hard rock) and the three-part “City” suite, which includes a brief snatch of Holst’s The Planets and some stupendous Spanish guitar work from Emmett on the hilariously named segment “El Duende Agonizante” (which roughly translates to “The Agonizing Gnome”). Things changed once Greatest Hits was released in 1997, since its release guaranteed the eventual appearance of records like Sony Music Special Products’ Rock and Roll Band, a budget-line compilation of highlights from the first two albums. Rock You Sinners! The Dawn of British Rock & Roll $8.49 For most listeners around the world, the “dawn” of British rock & roll didn’t take place until the Beatles started to make their first records. Even for those who grew up in the U.K. at the time, the true dawn of British rock often isn’t considered to have taken place until the late ’50s, when the first credible homegrown singers in the idiom emerged, like Cliff Richard and Billy Fury. In fact, however, British rock & roll — or, perhaps more accurately, the influence of rock & roll in British pop music — was starting to be heard as early as 1953, when bandleader Ted Heath covered Bill Haley’s “Crazy Man Crazy” (included on this CD). This intriguing 31-track compilation offers a wealth of pre-Cliff Richard & the Shadows recordings that, if not exactly rock & roll, showed British pop musicians trying to do something with the form. As it happened, they more often than not ended up sounding like rather staid swing jazz bands trying to broaden their appeal by putting a rock & roll or R&B song in their set without gaining any true grasp or appreciation of this newfangled music that had originated on the other side of the Atlantic. It wasn’t really until Tommy Steele’s late-1956 hit “Rock with the Caveman” (also included here) that any British performer made a reasonable approximation of authentic rock & roll sounds, and even that hit was something of a clumsy novelty. But while this is by no means something you would put on the order of the later British pioneers like Richard, Fury, and Johnny Kidd, let alone jump blues and early rock & roll bands rocking the urban centers of the United States, that doesn’t mean that this isn’t a fairly enjoyable compilation on its own musical terms, if something of a crass guilty pleasure. Though many of these efforts to spice up what’s essentially fairly square jazz-pop music with a bit of rock & roll (or at least do a rock & roll song with a jazz arrangement) sound a little unintentionally funny, much of them do have a somewhat appealing naïve energy, like that of performers suppressing a grin while they exploit a passing fad. Of course, that passing fad, both in the U.S. and U.K., turned out to be the most popular musical style of the 20th century, relegating these early somewhat exploitative attempts to mimic it to the dustbins of history. This compilation is a small revelation, however, in exposing how the roots of the music’s foothold in Britain ran much deeper and earlier than is commonly assumed, almost amounting to documentation of a missing chapter in rock & roll history. Yes, there are some awfully stiff covers of early rock & roll hits on board, like Gale Warning’s Mae West-ish take on “Heartbreak Hotel.” But really, some of these tracks aren’t bad by any standards, like Steele’s credibly swinging “Doomsday Rock” and Tony Crombie & His Rockets’ credibly pounding “Rock Shuffle Boogie,” while the Goons’ parody “Bloodnok’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Call” (an actual number three U.K. hit in 1956) remains pretty funny. ~

The quite detailed and historically astute liner notes to Rock ‘n’ Roll Bell Ringers don’t exactly say so, but the idea was pretty exploitative: take a current chart hit, record a cover with some faceless singers backed by New York session musicians, and sell it for a lower price than the original version. No doubt these roped in customers who didn’t know (or didn’t care) that what they were buying wasn’t exactly the same recording they’d heard of the song on the radio. This anthology has 26 such examples, and although some top musicians like Al Caiola and Panama Francis played on at least some of these recordings, just one of these singles featured singers who were bona fide hitmakers (for the surprise answer, read on). While it’s amusing and historically interesting that this sort of thing was going on — and apparently turning a profit — the actual records, as you’d expect, aren’t very interesting. It’s not astonishing that these interpretations of early rock & roll classics like “Maybellene,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Johnny B. Goode,” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” were usually far inferior to the originals. But they’re not even that entertaining in a so-bad-they’re-funny way. They’re just bland re-creations that dilute the power of the originals, almost as if they’re a symptom of how much of the record industry initially tried to literally white-out rock & roll, with watered-down R&B/rock & roll covers that tried to erase the material’s black and hillbilly origins by making it over into mainstream pop. That makes this release of more folkloric than musical interest, though it does include an unlikely cover of Jan & Dean’s “Baby Talk” by Tom & Jerry — the teenage duo who, in the 1960s, would find massive folk-rock success as Simon & Garfunkel. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

If you are a fan of digital music, you probably have problems organizing your music file collections. For me, I used have hundreds of MP3 files grouped in one folder on my hard drive. Can you imagine the pain that I had to go to find a melody own listening?

Organizing your music files is an important skill to learn. Once your collection is very well Out sorted, you'll be able to find the songs you want quickly and easily. So set aside some time and read the following tips that I find.

1. Create subfolders

The most important tip for organizing your music files is to create sub-folders your hard drive. Never leave your MP3 files in one huge folder called C: My music. Create subfolders like C: My MusicClassical, C: My MusicPop and C: My MusicSoundtracks.

2. Make sure that the ID3 tags are correct

ID3 tags are used to store important information about MP3 files. Things like the title the song, artist, album will be maintained and displayed by your MP3 player. Take time to properly edit these tags – many MP3 files you download the ID3 tag information all wrong. A good software to edit your ID3 tags is TagScanner.

3. Invest in Good Music Management Software

There are several excellent pieces of software out there for managing music files. Two good come to mind. MediaMonkey is the first and the second is MusicMatch Jukebox. Both programs offer excellent features for managing music as a music player integrated features for burning CDs and ID3 tag renaming.

4. Get your music from legal sources

If you've been using the music download P2P (peer-to-peer) sharing file like Kazaa, you'll most likely get music files which have strange names like 56_HeyjAck.mp3. My advice: get your files from legal sources, such as music services iTunes or Napster and you avoid this problem.

5. Create Good Playlists

Most software music player (eg Winamp) will allow you to create playlists. For example, say you're in the mood for rock songs, you can point to your folder called C: MusicRock and create a playlist from that folder. Save the playlist after it. When you next feel like listening these songs, all you need do is load that playlist instead of trawling through your hard drive and folders.

6. Get A Hard Drive Huge

I know this sounds a little crazy – but running out of disk space can and will ruin your music collection well organized. " Make sure you have enough disk space to store your music files. Say you have 10,000 music files that you must retain and listen. It is a very bad idea to store, for example, 8,000 files in Hard Drive A and 2,000 files from hard drive very messy B.. It is preferable to store in a single disk drive. So to protect your hands on the biggest hard drive you can find.
